Auditory Presentation of Graphical User Interfaces 1

چکیده

The majority of work in auditory user interfaces has focused on adding auditory cues to a visual interface. This paper presents work in designing interactive auditory-only interfaces where the design of the interface is driven by a challenging task -providing access to graphical user interfaces for people who are blind. This task requires that the auditory-only interface must be able to provide the same functionality supported by a graphical user interface. A prototype system called Mercator is described as well as some of the design strategies for Mercator’s auditory interfaces. The results from a small user study are also presented with a concluding discussion on future research efforts.

Transforming Graphical Interfaces Into Auditory Interfaces for Blind Users

While graphical interfaces have provided a host of advantages to the majority of computer users, they have created a significant barrier to blind computer users. To meet the needs of these users, a methodology for transforming graphical interfaces into nonvisual interfaces has been developed. In this design, the salient components of graphical interfaces are transformed into auditory interfaces...

oriented textual output displayed on the screen was stored in the computer’s framebuffer. An access program could simply copy the contents of the framebuffer to a speech synthesizer, a Braille terminal or a Braille printer. Conversely, the contents of the framebuffer for a graphical interface are simple pixel values. To provide access to GUIs, it is necessary to intercept application output bef...

Touch-Display Keyboards and their Integration with Graphical User Interfaces

We introduce Touch-Display Keyboards (TDK) that retain the traditional physical key layout and in addition provide dynamic display and touch-sensing capability for each key. We demonstrate how TDKs can be seamlessly integrated with graphical user interfaces by extending the graphical output as well as three-state input across the keyboard’s surface. TDKs allow the graphical interface to be dyna...

Fluid inking: augmenting the medium of free-form inking with gestures

We present Fluid Inking, a generally applicable approach to augmenting the fluid medium of free-form inking with gestural commands. Our approach is characterized by four design criteria, including: 1) pen-based hardware impartiality: all interactions can be performed with a button-free stylus, the minimal input hardware requirement for inking, and the least common denominator device for pen-bas...
